Making a Small Bathroom feel Bigger

When renovating or updating a home, one of the most important upgrades is in the bathroom. The master bath and secondary bathrooms need to feel roomy, airy, and have plenty of storage for toiletries and other cosmetic items. Sometimes, a small bathroom space can limit the upgrade potential, but here are a few ways to open up a small bathroom into feeling a bit larger.

1. Utilize Pedestal Sinks or Furniture-Style Vanities
A built in full vanity or bathroom cabinet can be a nice touch, but when attempting to open up a small bathroom, using an open vanity or pedestal sink can give the area a more roomy feeling. Storage is still imperative, so under the sink storage baskets or “cubbies” can be used in lieu of traditional cabinet areas. Small drawers are usually a must have for small cosmetic supplies such as hair and hygiene products.

2. Use Clear Glass for Shower Doors
If you have a stand alone shower rather than a bath tub, utilize clear glass doors and exterior shower walls to include the inside of the shower in the immediate viewing area. Using smoked or white glass can remove cut off the visible area of the bathroom at the outside of the shower. If using a bathtub, try a claw foot tub rather than a built in.

3. Avoid bulky towel racks
Using a protruding towel rack can make the bathroom feel cramped. Try using thin stainless steal towel racks to unclutter the walls of the bathroom, giving it a more open and airy look. I longer towel rack along the wall can give the bathroom more depth.

4. It’s All About the Tile
If you have shower tile, try using a light tile throughout the shower area. Adding decorative tiles around shower knobs can give a shower a whole new look for a cheap price, while also opening up the shower area. If using a stand-alone bath, try tiling half the wall rather than tub to ceiling. It creates visually creates a roomier aesthetic in the bath area.

5. Round Toilets and Oval Sinks
Oval shaped toilets are usually longer than a round bowl toilet, which takes up more space. Using a round bowl toilet can decrease the amount of used space while not having to sacrifice much else. The sink and vanity can also be kept thin and less obtrusive by using elongated oval sinks and vanity or cabinets that are less depth.
