What Are Cabinets For Anyways?

In this day and age, contrarily to the past few decades, cabinetry has emerged as a major furniture industry, and has since then evolved to such as point that clients can now order the cabinets they want, shaped into the exact specifications demanded, made out of the requested materials. Here are some ideas as to how to put cabinetry to good use.

The first and most obvious place where cabinets should be installed is the kitchen. You can use them to not only store away all of your non-perishable foods, plates and ingredients, but you can also use them as a stylistic complement to the rest of your kitchen; having the right cabinetry for your kitchen will do wonders in terms of how aesthetically pleasing your house looks.

Second of all, cabinets would be a very good idea to organize play rooms. Without proper storage space, the toys can get scattered all over the room, and with time, some toys are bound to get lost. Having cabinetry in your play room will also teach your children how to stay clean and organized from a very young age.

Last, but not least, you can install some cabinets in your bedrooms. It’s actually a pretty good idea for people who tend to leave clothes to form big and messy piles on the floor, as it will give them the opportunity as well as all the tools to get their room back in working order. If you have a small bedroom and don’t really have any space to install new cabinets, then you can always try and go for customized cabinets, which can be tailored to your exact specifications and designed according to your image, suiting pretty much anyone’s needs.

In essence, it’s quite clear that cabinets not only have a place in our everyday life, but I’d go as far as saying that they’re a mandatory part of our lives, serving as the ever-needed storage we will always need.

Kitchen Cabinet Secrets

Contractors are constantly looking for ways to cut the budget on their renovation jobs. After talking to several of my friends that were contractors, I found some of the secrets they use to putting more money in their pocket.  Ironically, most of them have been using RTA kitchen cabinets that could be bought and assembled for far less than standard cabinets.

Below is a story from one my friends that is a contractor in the Philadelphia area.

“I was in one of home supply centers and was going to buy my kitchen cabinets the usual way. I already had the pre-assembled kitchen cabinets loaded into onto one of those flat carts when I casually complained to another customer that there has got to be a better way than hauling all these kitchen cabinets around. The other customer jokingly said buy them online. Of course I thought it was a joke. I did a little research and found out that the kitchen cabinets get shipped to you, you avoid any store hassles, and the best part is that the cost was 40% less than the big box home center prices. Part of the reason these kitchen cabinets cost less is because they are considered “kitchen cabinets around. The other customer jokingly said buy them online. Of course I thought it was a joke. I did a little research and found out that the kitchen cabinets get shipped to you, you avoid any store hassles, and the best part is that the cost was 40% less than the big box home center prices. Part of the reason these kitchen cabinets cost less is because they are considered “RTA kitchen cabinets” which stands for ready to assemble kitchen cabinets.

So I decided to do a search and see what I could find online. I was floored! There are many choices out there and it was easy. When the kitchen cabinets arrived, I was shocked again. Not only were the kitchen cabinets solid wood, but they did not have one piece of cardboard or particle board. The reason I mentioned this is because the big box stores have solid fronts but very little else in the areas of real wood.

Finally, I thought these kitchen cabinets might be a hassle to assemble. The kitchen cabinets were easy to assemble. Each cabinet came with a single page of directions and needed only a flat head screw driver to put them together. The cabinets with drawers were a little more time consuming and I used my electric drill to make the assembly go faster, but overall the kitchen cabinets are easy to put together.

Finding an RTA cabinet store might be difficult in some areas of the country, but if you look online you will be able to find these sites quite easily. There is a shipping cost; however, if you buy enough kitchen cabinets the shipping is reduced or actually free. Keep in mind that after I added shipping costs, my overall spending was still a lot less than what I would have spent at a super center.

So the secret to in-expensive kitchen cabinets is to go online and find them yourself. So start searching, it might be a little more effort but it is worth it.”

Remodeling Your Kitchen – Will it Pay Off When You Sell?

Many homeowners often ask the question, will I get back my money on this remodel if I sell my house soon? The short answer is, it depends.

My second short answer is yes! If your overall home is nice and your kitchen is lacking then it maybe wise to remodel before you resale. But you must take into account the cost to remodel, do not go overboard on your kitchen if your home is an average dwelling. Find out what is happening in your neighborhood as far as kitchen remodels go.

Never remodel with a strong niche theme in mind. That means no checkered flooring, retro, country, etc. A theme that does not fit with your home and or mass market may make it harder to sell your home. Remodeling for profit means your kitchen cost should be no more than 8% of total home value.

For an honest opinion ask your friends and family. You can never trust someone who has motive to gain business or profit from your home. Take it for what it is worth.

Hiring a remodeling contractor. Make a list of exactly what are must have item for your project then hand them out to all that come over to bid. Get as many bids as you like and then you can eliminate from the bottom up. Every contractor thinks they do good work. I know guys who have been remodeling for 20 years who are not very good with quality. Just because they have done it for the longest time does not have anything to do with their knowledge or quality.

Take your time. Avoid contractors that are in a hurry to get you to sign something. They are worried you will find someone better. They are not very confident that you will pick them and their deal.

Finally, If you are in doubt? Don’t do it. Time will tell. But if you plan to live there for a while and think you will enjoy the remodel and can afford it than I say go for it. Often times when I am done with a remodel the homeowner will tell me I really wish I would have done this sooner. ]
